Enslaved Life and Labor on Maryland Plantations

  • Date: 02/20/2021 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
  • Location: VIRTUAL

Virtual Presenter: Dr. Leigh Ryan

What was life like for those enslaved on a Maryland plantation? Where did they live? What kinds of work did they do? How did they resist? This overview will offer some answers to these and other questions. Dr. Leigh Ryan volunteers at Riversdale House Museum, where she is now working on an exhibit devoted to enslaved workers. She also volunteers with the Prince George’s County Historical Society Library and the Prince George’s County Lynching Memorial Project. Dr. Ryan retired after directing The University of Maryland’s Writing Center for 30+ years; at UMD, she also taught courses on plantation life and local antebellum history.
