The City of Greenbelt is proud to offer the first public drop off site for oyster shell recycling in Prince George's County! The site is located at the Buddy Attick Park Residential Recycling Center where residents can take their empty shells to the drop off location to be collected by the Oyster Shell Recovery Partnership and taken to the University of Maryland, Horn Point Oyster Hatchery. They are then aged, washed, and used as anchor sites for oyster larvae called spat. Each recycled oyster shell can host up to ten baby spat! The shells with anchored spat are then planted in oyster reefs along the Chesapeake Bay, supporting the local population and seafood market.
