Greenbelt’s advisory boards and commissions are essential components of our city’s governance structure. Composed of dedicated community members, these boards and commissions provide valuable insights, recommendations, and support to the City Council and staff on a wide range of issues. Their work helps ensure that Greenbelt remains a vibrant, well-governed community that reflects the values and needs of our residents. By participating in these groups, members have the opportunity to directly influence local policies and contribute to the betterment of our city.

Advisory Boards and Commissions
1. Advisory Committee on Education
Purpose: The purpose of the Advisory Committee on Education is to:
- Keep the council and community informed of all current and long-range Prince George’s County Board of Education policies and programs that may affect the Greenbelt community, provide a Greenbelt perspective and presence before the Prince George’s County Board of Education, and Represent City of Greenbelt interests before the Prince George’s County Board of Education
- Serve as a liaison between the Greenbelt community and Council on matters of public and private school education
- Facilitate Greenbelt community involvement in public and private school education
- Develop approaches for the recognition of student achievement, teacher excellence, PTSA activities and specific school contributions to the community

2. Advisory Planning Board
Purpose: The purpose of the Advisory Planning Board is to engage in such activities as are necessary to provide the council with workable solutions to such problems as:
- Residential, commercial and industrial land development
- Zoning changes
- Building and housing codes
- Urban renewal
- Transportation and community facilities
- Capital budgeting
- Other activities as may be referred to it by action of City Council

3. Arts Advisory Board
Purpose: The purpose of the Arts Advisory Board is to:
- Review and make recommendations regarding the formal arts policy for the city
- Advise the City Council and citizens on matters relating to the arts
- Promote and work to increase citizen participation in arts program and individual activities
- Assist city arts organizations in raising funds
- Supplement city staff as a liaison with arts-related organizations
- Assist in planning and annually evaluating the city’s arts program

4. Board of Elections
Purpose: The purpose of the Board of Elections is to:
- Periodically review city election procedures and regulations, then recommend to council such changes it deems will provide for the improved conduct of elections
- Designate polling places
- Hear appeals of decisions of the City Clerk
- Appoint election judges and clerks
- Examine any complaints made concerning the judges and clerks
- Certify the results of elections
- Conduct recounts of votes cast in elections whenever there is doubt as to the accuracy of the count
- Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the charter, ordinances, and resolution

5. Community Relations Advisory Board
Purpose: The purpose of the Community Relations Advisory Board is to:
- Foster sympathetic understanding, harmonious relationships, tolerance, good will, individual responsibility, and a practical cooperation among all groups and individuals in the community
- Serve as the city’s Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliance Committee to hear complaints from individuals who believe they have been discriminated against by the city on the basis of a disability

6. Forest Preserve Advisory Board
Purpose: The purpose of the Forest Preserve Advisory Board is to:
- Advise on the formulation of policy related to the management and maintenance of the Greenbelt Forest Preserve and on the designation of Forest Preserve areas
- Annually, report to the City Council on the health and condition of the Forest Preserve. Monitor the Forest Preserve, as well as activities within it, and report any circumstances requiring attention
- As needed, review and make recommendations on the Management and Maintenance Guidelines and the Forest Preserve Article of the City Code
- As needed, sponsor educational and interpretative programs to further the city’s objective of protecting the Forest Preserve areas

7. Park and Recreation Advisory Board
Purpose: The purpose of the Park and Recreation Advisory Board is to determine needs, make recommendations, and give other needed advisory services to the City Council, City Manager, and the director of Recreation on matters relating to park and recreational services.

8. Public Safety Advisory Committee
Purpose: The purpose of the Public Safety Advisory Committee is to:
- Advise council and make recommendations regarding public safety issues and the city’s ability to handle public safety situations
- Advise council on educating the community about public safety issues, concerns, and programs
- Review public safety policies and plans
- Facilitate community involvement in public safety and increase citizen awareness
- Improve and promote cooperation and coordination between the community and public safety agencies
