Project Purpose
The Greenbelt Road (MD 193) Corridor runs through the municipalities of Greenbelt, College Park, and Berwyn Heights and connects – or divides – neighborhoods, commercial areas, and natural attractions. Greenbelt Road also provides a number of regional connections to other major roadways and trails. The Greenbelt Road (MD 193) Corridor Plan aims to create a cohesive vision for the future of the corridor and is seen as a next step in building on the recommendations of the 2018 Urban Land Institute (ULI) report Creating a Future for Greenbelt Road/MD-193, which was prepared for the same portion of Greenbelt Road. A final report, anticipated in Summer 2022, will identify short- and long-term recommendations for the corridor and proposed next steps.
Study Area
The study area spans a nearly 2-mile segment of Greenbelt Road from Baltimore Avenue to Kenilworth Avenue. It also includes a portion of University Boulevard (MD 193) to just west of Rhode Island Avenue, to ensure that any proposed mobility improvements tie into planned improvements on Rhode Island Avenue. This is the same area that was studied in the 2018 ULI report.
