ED Quality of Life PageQUALITY OF LIFE

The City of Greenbelt is in the history books as one of the first planned communities in the United States, and was built as a federal venture in housing. From the beginning, it was designed as a complete city, with businesses, schools, roads, facilities for recreation, and a town government. Greenbelt was a planned community, noted for its interior walkways, underpasses, system of inner courtyards, and one of the first mall-type shopping centers in the United States.

Today, many of the original features of this planned community still exist. The cooperative spirit and the strong sense of community are passed on to new generations. Even today, a dozen of the original families still live in the city, with many of their children and grandchildren choosing to reside in Greenbelt. It is the dedication and legacy of these families that continues to serve as the cornerstone of the city.

As Greenbelt has expanded to include new housing and commercial areas just outside of the historic core, Greenbelt still maintains its small-town atmosphere, parks, playgrounds, cooperative spirit and some of the most distinctive and affordable housing in the Washington area.

With a supportive physical infrastructure and affordable housing, Greenbelt is the home to small, medium and large enterprises. With available retail, office and commercial space and low costs, Greenbelt is continually attracting new and expanding existing businesses.
