Black History Month: Cultural Program

In-Person Cultural Program

Sunday, February 19, 2:30 - 4:30 pm at the Greenbelt Community Center, 15 Crescent Rd featuring: Spoken word artists: Chris Haley, reading from his newly published book of poems, which will be available for sale; Sainey Cessay, 2021 Youth Poet Laureate, PG County; Francis Stedman, Poet, St. Lucia, W.I.

Mestre Santemu: will demonstrate a display of Capoeira Angola, an African established martial art form, used to secure maroon societies in Brazil during enslavement. Mestre is one of the only African American (Afro-USA) to be recognized as a mestre of Capoeira Angola.

Kweku Owusu: from Ghana, master drum builder, teacher and performer with his group Hands on Drums. The CHEARS Earth Squad and youth of the Springhill Lake Recreation Center will dance, accompanied by Hands on Drums. 

Snow Date: Sunday, March 19 from 2:30 - 4:30 pm.
