Individuals serving on Greenbelt’s boards and committees provide an invaluable service to the city. Their advice and expertise on a wide range of topics assist the City Council in its decision-making process.

Since the first residents began organizing in 1937, Greenbelt has been a city of volunteers. It relies heavily on its citizens and has always been blessed with an active, educated and interested population. It is this effective involvement of residents, in all aspects of community life, that has made Greenbelt such a unique place.

Purpose

Every board and committee has a specific statement of purpose and function. The size of each group is dictated by its duties and responsibilities. Select a particular board or committee from the left for information about that group.

Eligibility

Only Greenbelt residents are eligible for appointment to city boards and committees.

Persons employed by or under contract to the city are not eligible for membership except as non-voting liaisons. The one exception is that a young adult member of the Youth Advisory Committee is permitted to take a leave of absence to accept a summer job with the city.

Individuals may serve on only one City Council advisory board or committee at a given time, with the exception of ad hoc committees or task forces.

Appointment

Board and committee vacancies are advertised in the Greenbelt News Review, at city facilities, and on the City's Municipal Access Channels (Verizon 21 and Comcast 71). Any interested resident is encouraged to submit a Board Application to the City Council in care of the city clerk. After a period of time has passed and applications have been received, the following process occurs:

  • Applications are duplicated and sent to the council.
  • Short interview meetings (10-15 minutes) are scheduled with the City Council.
  • The City Council decides shortly thereafter who will be appointed to the vacancies. The individuals will receive notification of their appointments along with relevant background material.
  • Applicants who are not appointed will be so notified and advised that their applications will remain on file for consideration when future vacancies occur.

Attendance

Most advisory groups meet once a month. Excessive absenteeism, excluding illness or necessary travel, is cause for removal of a board or committee member.
