Reel and Meal Screens “The Cost of Inheritance” on Monday, August 19
Reel and Meal will show the film The Cost of Inheritance at 7 p.m. on Monday, August 19 at the New Deal Cafe (113 Centerway, Greenbelt, MD) and via Zoom.
The 2023 film traces our nation’s legacy of systemic inequities from its beginnings to modern-day America, introducing audiences to descendants of enslaved persons and slave owners, profiling their complex intertwined histories, and detailing how their quest to bridge divides has galvanized them to seek reparations together.
Briayna Cuffie, co-founder of the Annapolis-based organization Reparations4Slavery, appears in the film and will be at the New Deal Café on August 19 to tell about her work and lead a discussion after the film.
The Cost of Inheritance screening is hosted by a group that has emerged to support Greenbelt’s Reparations Commission, the GILA Reparations Education Task Force. The team will also introduce its upcoming “Coming to the Table” initiative: a monthly dinner, study and facilitated conversation to increase racial unity and understanding.
Café attendees are encouraged to order dinner from the New Deal Café’s menu, which includes several vegan options. Film attendance is free. Donations to Reel and Meal are accepted.
