  • How does the automated speed enforcement program work?

    Automated speed enforcement systems are comprised of a speed measurement device, camera, and a computer. Speed measuring devices identify motorists traveling 12mph or more over the posted speed limit. Cameras capture license plate images of violations and computers record all of the relevant data associated with the violation.

    When a speed violation occurs, the automated speed enforcement equipment records:

    • The date
    • The time
    • The speed of the vehicle

  • Where is the citation sent? How long after the violation is it sent?

    The citation is mailed to the address of the vehicle’s registered owner that is obtained from Maryland Vehicle Administration (MVA). The citation is required by law to be mailed within 14 days of the violation for instate license plates and 30 days for out of state plates.

  • What is the fine for a violation?

    The fine for a speed violation is $40.
  • Who is responsible for paying the citation?

    The citation is issued to the registered owner of the vehicle, similar to a parking ticket. The registered owner is the responsible party who must ensure the fine is paid or request a court date.

  • Will points be assessed against my license for a citation?

    The citation is considered a civil penalty therefore No points will be assessed against your driver’s license.

  • Where do I call if I have a question about the speed camera program?

  • How can I contest my citation?

    Citations can be contested in Maryland District Court. Details are included on the back of the citation notice or by calling the customer service line at (443) 749 – 8835.

  • What will happen if I do not pay the fine?

    Unpaid citations are subjected to additional consequences, including vehicle registration non-renewal or suspension

  • How do I obtain a VR119 (flag release) for my vehicle?

    Once you have paid your citation(s) with the City of Greenbelt you may obtain a flag release by calling the customer service line at (443) 749 – 8835 to request a mailed copy.

    If you are at the MVA you may call customer service and a copy of the flag release can be faxed over to its office. MVA will only accept a fax copy for the customer service center.

  • I was not the driver of the vehicle. How do I Transfer Liability?

    Liability for citations ultimately rests with the registered owner.

    The individual or company named on the citation must write a sworn letter to the District Court stating that he/she was not operating the vehicle at the time of the violation, along with any corroborating evidence that supports your statement and representations that you were not operating the vehicle at the time of the violation.

  • What if my license plate or vehicle was stolen?

    A copy of the police report or documentation from MVA listing date of cancellation of stolen items must be mailed to the City of Greenbelt Automated Speed P. O. Box 5046 Hagerstown, MD 21741.

  • What if the registered owner of the vehicle is deceased?

    Citations assigned to the vehicle of a now deceased registered owner maybe dismissed upon receipt of the following documentation:

    1. For violations issued prior to the date of death: A copy of the death certificate of the registered owner.
    2. For violations issued after the date of death: A copy of the receipt of cancellation from MVA.

    The individual will be notified as to the status of the citation(s) in question.
