Art Anytime - Activities for All Ages
Living Picture Challenge: Create a "Tableau Vivant"!
Recreate images from art history - as faithfully as possible, or with your own unique spin. Use household materials creatively to make costumes, props and sets. They can be as simple or complex as you like - no special skills or materials needed. See our activity sheet for additional examples and links to searchable museum collections for inspiration. Send your photos to ndewald@greenbeltmd.gov to share on social media. Pictured above: “A Girl Reading” by Johann Georg Meyer, and Felicity Garcia in her Greenbelt home.
One Minute Sculptures
Use household objects to “realize” the participatory sculptures of Austrian artist Erwin Wurm - then invent some of your own! All ages.
Make a Drum
Create and decorate your own instrument using a cardboard frame and a fabric drum head. Tutorial by Artist in Residence Karen Arrington.
Abstraction Action - 2D Art Activity
Use repeating forms to create lively drawings or collages! For inspiration, see the work of Odili Donald Odita, Jim Lambie, and Melinda Harper. Activity courtesy of the National Gallery of Victoria (Australia). Ages 6 and up.
Fashion Challenge: Rei Kawakubo
Are you ready for some daring dress up? Use pillows and household textiles to create outlandish, volumetric looks inspired by the work of Rei Kawakubo, an avant garde Japanese designer. No sewing involved! All ages.
